Mary, the Mother of Jesus

She was a young woman – likely a teenager – from a town nobody respected, betrothed to a carpenter, when Gabriel arrived with the most staggering birth announcement ever delivered. Mary asked her honest question (“How will this be?”), heard the answer, and gave the reply on which the incarnation turned: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:26-38). Her Magnificat, sung in Elizabeth’s doorway, shows what filled her mind: Scripture – Hannah’s song, the covenant with Abraham, a God who topples thrones and fills the hungry (Luke 1:46-55).

The Gospels give her a mother’s full range: giving birth far from home; treasuring the shepherds’ words and pondering them in her heart (Luke 2:19); hearing Simeon promise that a sword would pierce her own soul; three days of frantic searching for a twelve-year-old; prompting the first sign at Cana with the best advice in Scripture – “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5) – and at least once arriving with the family to take custody of a son they feared was out of his mind (Mark 3:21, 31-35).

The sword came at Golgotha, where she stood – not collapsed, standing – near the cross, and heard Jesus give her into John’s keeping (John 19:25-27). Luke’s last glimpse settles her among the believers in the upper room, praying and waiting for Pentecost (Acts 1:14): from the first yes to the birth of the church.
