Week 9 Discussion Guide: Week 9 Discussion
Week 9 Discussion Guide
Use these questions with your group or for personal reflection at the end of the week.
Opening (5 minutes)
- What is one thing from the entire study through Genesis that you will carry with you?
Observation (10 minutes)
- What does Jacob’s insistence on burial in Canaan tell us about what he believed about God’s promises?
- What is significant about the last image of Genesis — Joseph’s coffin in Egypt, with a promise attached to it?
Interpretation (15 minutes)
- Joseph says “Am I in the place of God?” when his brothers fear revenge. What does this question accomplish theologically? How does it relate to Romans 12:19?
- The blessing of Judah in Genesis 49 promises a coming king. How does Jesus fulfill this prophecy, and what does it tell us about how God keeps his word?
Application (15 minutes)
- Joseph forgives not once but twice — at the revelation scene and again after Jacob dies. What does this tell us about the ongoing nature of forgiveness rather than a one-time event?
- Genesis ends looking forward. As you close this study, what promise of God are you being called to trust in the chapter of life you are currently in?
Prayer (5 minutes)
Close in prayer, thanking God for the faithfulness he has shown across the whole arc of Genesis — from creation to a coffin — and asking him to build in your group the same long-term faith that sustained Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.
