Week 8: From Prison to Palace
Week 8 Overview
The reversal is now complete. Joseph — dreamer, slave, prisoner — stands as the second most powerful man in the world. Then his brothers arrive, not knowing who they are speaking to. The tension in these chapters is almost unbearable: Joseph recognizes his brothers immediately, but they do not recognize him. He tests them, weeps, hides his emotions, and tests them again — not out of cruelty but to see whether they have changed. When he can hold it no longer, he reveals himself in one of the most emotionally overwhelming moments in all of literature.
Weekly Memory Verse
“And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.” — Genesis 45:5 (ESV)

Discussion
Background
Joseph’s testing of his brothers is not revenge — it is a moral audit. He wants to know if they have changed. When Judah (the brother who originally suggested selling Joseph) offers himself as a substitute for Benjamin, the circle is complete: the same man who once sold a brother now offers himself to save one. That transformation is what Joseph has been waiting to see.
