Week 8 Discussion Guide: Week 8 Discussion

Week 8 Discussion Guide

Use these questions with your group or for personal reflection at the end of the week.

Opening (5 minutes)

Observation (10 minutes)

  1. How does Judah in chapter 44 differ from Judah in chapter 37? What changed him?
  2. What does Joseph do before accusing his brothers — and what does he never do? What does that sequence tell us about how he handles forgiveness?

Interpretation (15 minutes)

  1. Joseph says “God sent me” three times in Genesis 45. How does this framing of providence relate to — without denying — the brothers’ real guilt?
  2. How does Judah’s substitutionary offer in chapter 44 prepare us to understand the cross?

Application (15 minutes)

  1. Joseph’s forgiveness was not a feeling but a theological act — rooted in his understanding of God’s sovereignty. What would it mean to forgive someone in your life through that same theological lens?
  2. “You meant it for evil; God meant it for good.” Is there a chapter of your own story you have not yet been able to read that way? What makes it difficult?

Prayer (5 minutes)

Close in prayer for any in the group who are carrying unforgiveness — asking God to give them the long theology of Joseph, and the grace to move toward those who have hurt them.
