Day 4: Three Visitors
Reading: Genesis 18:1–15
Listen to: Genesis chapter 18
Historical Context
The three visitors who appear to Abraham at the oaks of Mamre are one of the most theologically rich encounters in the Old Testament. Abraham shows extravagant hospitality — preparing a lavish meal for three unexpected guests. As the scene unfolds, it becomes clear that one of the visitors is the LORD himself (v. 10, 13–14). This type of divine appearance — where God takes human form to appear to humans — is called a “theophany.”
Key Themes
Ordinary hospitality, extraordinary encounter. Abraham does not know at first that his guests are divine. His generous welcome of strangers becomes the occasion for a defining moment in salvation history — the announcement that Sarah will bear a son.
Sarah’s laughter. Sarah laughs at the promise — not with joy but with incredulity. She is ninety years old and long past childbearing. God’s response — “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” — becomes one of Scripture’s foundational affirmations of divine power.
Connections
- New Testament echo: Hebrews 13:2 alludes to this episode as a reason to “show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”
- Parallel passage: Luke 1:37 — “For nothing will be impossible with God” — echoes Genesis 18:14 in the angel’s announcement to Mary.
Reflection Questions
- What does the connection between ordinary hospitality and this extraordinary encounter suggest about where God might show up in your everyday life?
- Sarah laughs with disbelief. Have you ever been confronted with a promise that seemed impossible to believe? What did that feel like?
- “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” — how does this question function as a challenge to your current fears or doubts?
Prayer
Lord, nothing is too hard for you. Not the promises that seem too old, too broken, or too far gone. Help us to laugh with joy, not disbelief, at what you have said you will do. And make us the kind of people whose doors are open to unexpected encounters with you. Amen.
