Week 24: Memory Verse

Memory verse illustration for Week 24

Acts 13:47 is a watershed moment in the book of Acts. Paul and Barnabas have been preaching in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch, and the initial response is enthusiastic. But when jealous opponents stir up opposition, Paul makes a declaration that changes the trajectory of the entire Christian movement: “Since you thrust the word of God aside… we are turning to the Gentiles.” He backs this stunning pivot with Isaiah 49:6, a Servant Song that originally described Israel’s mission to the nations.

The audacity of the move cannot be overstated. Paul is claiming that what Isaiah prophesied about the Servant of the Lord now applies to him and his mission. The light that was always meant for the Gentiles is being carried by a former Pharisee who once breathed threats against anyone who proclaimed Jesus as Messiah. The verse reveals that the Gentile mission was never Plan B — it was always God’s intention, embedded in the prophets centuries before Paul set foot on a single missionary road.
