Week 21: Memory Verse
Acts 1:8 is the table of contents for the entire book of Acts. Jesus lays out four concentric circles — Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, the end of the earth — and the rest of the book traces the gospel’s expansion through each one. Chapters 1-7 cover Jerusalem. Chapters 8-12 move into Judea and Samaria. Chapters 13-28 carry the message to the end of the earth, culminating with Paul preaching in Rome, the capital of the known world.
But the verse is not primarily about geography. It is about power and identity. The disciples wanted to know when Jesus would restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus redirects them: you will receive power, and you will be witnesses. The Greek word for “witnesses” is martyres, from which we get “martyr.” To be a witness in Acts is not merely to share information but to stake your life on it. The power of the Holy Spirit does not make the task easy — it makes the witnesses faithful.
Connections This Week
- Day 1 — Jesus speaks these words as his final instruction before ascending, giving the disciples the mission roadmap that the entire book of Acts will follow
- Day 2 — At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends and the promised power arrives, transforming frightened disciples into bold public witnesses
- Day 5 — The early church's communal life in Acts 2:42-47 is the first visible fruit of the Spirit's power, demonstrating what empowered witness looks like in daily practice
