Week 4: Memory Verse

Memory verse illustration for Week 4

Mark 1:15 is Jesus’ thesis statement. Everything that follows in the Gospels is an unpacking of these four compressed claims: the time is fulfilled (God’s ancient promises are being kept), the kingdom of God is at hand (God’s reign is breaking into the present), repent (turn around completely), and believe in the gospel (trust this good news with your life).

Notice that Jesus does not say the kingdom is coming someday. He says it is “at hand” — present tense, arriving now. The healings, the exorcisms, the calling of disciples this week are all kingdom actions. The future has invaded the present, and nothing will be the same.

Connections This Week

  • Day 1 — Jesus speaks these words as his opening proclamation when he begins his public ministry in Galilee
  • Day 2 — The Nazareth synagogue scene shows what 'the time is fulfilled' looks like: Jesus reads Isaiah's prophecy and says 'Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing'
  • Day 4 — Every healing and exorcism in Mark 1 is evidence that the kingdom of God truly is 'at hand' — it is arriving in real time through Jesus' actions
