The instinct once you feel like you have gotten a passage is to move on to the next one. Resist it for one more day.
A passage does not finish giving you everything on the first read, even a slow one. The second time you sit with the same verses, you notice a phrase you skimmed past the first time. The third time, you notice why that phrase matters. None of that arrives on schedule, and it never arrives if you have already moved three chapters ahead.
Pick one passage, a paragraph or a short chapter, and stay there for a week instead of a day. Read it every day from a different angle: once for the story, once for a single character, once for what it says about God, once for what it asks of you. By the end of the week you will know a paragraph the way you know a person you have spent real time with, not a stranger you were introduced to once.
