Reading a verse and remembering it are not the same thing. One passes through you. The other stays.
Psalm 119 says it plainly.
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11 (ESV)
Storing takes more than a glance. It takes repetition, until the words are not something you have to look up but something already there, waiting.
Memorize is exactly the right word, not skim, not highlight, not read again next week. Say the verse out loud until you can say it without the page. One verse a week is enough. Pick the ones that hit you hardest when you read them; those are the ones you will need again.
This is not busywork. It is what makes the Holy Spirit’s job possible. He brings to mind what is already there. A verse you never memorized cannot come to mind at two in the morning, or in the middle of a hard decision, or in the moment you are being tempted to do something you already know is wrong. A verse hidden in your heart can.
