Week 44: Guarding the Faith
Big Picture
We complete 1 Timothy with its warning about the love of money, then move to Titus — Paul’s letter to his associate organizing churches on the island of Crete. The grace passage in Titus 2:11-14 is one of the most beautiful summaries of salvation in the NT. The week closes with the opening of 2 Timothy — Paul’s final letter, written from his second Roman imprisonment as he faces execution.
This week traverses an extraordinary range of pastoral territory. First Timothy 6 confronts the seductive power of wealth with one of the Bible’s most quoted (and most misquoted) statements: “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” Paul then establishes the radical alternative: “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” Moving to Titus, we encounter Paul’s letter to another apostolic delegate — this time on the Mediterranean island of Crete, where the cultural challenges are distinct and the churches are younger. Titus must appoint elders, silence false teachers, and teach sound doctrine to diverse groups within the congregation. The letter to Titus contains what many scholars regard as the most theologically compressed summary of grace in the entire New Testament (2:11-14), alongside the striking rebirth passage of 3:4-7. The week closes with the emotionally charged opening of 2 Timothy — Paul’s last surviving letter, written from a Roman dungeon as he faces execution. The shift from the relatively calm tone of 1 Timothy and Titus to the deeply personal urgency of 2 Timothy is palpable. Paul is lonely, cold, and abandoned by many — yet utterly unashamed and fully confident in the gospel he has guarded his entire life.

- Grace as teacher — The grace that saves also instructs, teaching believers to reject ungodliness and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while awaiting Christ’s return
- Courage and faithfulness under pressure — Paul’s call to Timothy to “fan into flame” his gift and not be ashamed of the gospel is issued against the backdrop of abandonment and approaching death
Memory Verse
“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” — Titus 2:11-12
Or alternatively:
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
